  • Imagine a world where Boston and Washington D.C. were connected by a futuristic super-highway that embraces alternative transportation. This is the vision behind Boston-based firm Howeler and Yoon’s award winning proposal for the Audi Urban Future competition. The out-of-the-box design is centered around a streamlined public and individual transportation system called the BosWash highway that would seamlessly connect suburbs to cities and cities to each other by linking all future communities to the Interstate 95. The firm believes that in a matter of decades, people could migrate toward this main transportation artery that would run buses, trains, subways, “people movers,” and individual cars at the same time.

Audi invited four firms to explore how cities of the future would depend on urban transportation. With a date of 2030 in mind, Howeler and Yoon pictured the New England region as a place that no longer embraced the typical suburban dream of an isolated house and lawn. They saw future societies integrating with each other and combining their transportation needs to create a cleaner, greener atmosphere with fast and efficient travel.

The resulting BosWash super-highway is unique as it revolves around a 450-mile highway that already exists, rather than building an entirely new infrastructure. The future of transportation, according to Howeler and Yoon, is simply an evolution of people and community, growing from what we have currently have.
