Joggers Spot a Dolphin in the East River

Joggers out on their morning run were surprised to spot a dolphin swimming in the the East River yesterday. The bottlenose dolphin, which appeared to be uninjured, was seen in the waters between East 96th Street and East 106th Street. Biologists who were on the scene yesterday are still evaluating the health of the dolphin, which ended up alone after it was disconnected from its family pod.
Kim Durham, rescue program director for the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation , was at the scene yesterday and is still concerned about the dolphin’s state of health. “He’s not a healthy animal, but he’s not at death’s door,” she told the New York Post . “He’s thin, but he’s swimming very well.’’
The last dolphin sighting in late January didn’t turn out so well. The animal died as it struggled to swim out of the trenches of the polluted Gowanus Canal in Brooklyn. It was reported that the deceased dolphin suffered from a series of chronic conditions, including stomach ulcers and kidney stones.
The Riverhead Foundation has documented four occasions of reports of marine mammals in or near the East River since 2010. They recently posted to their Facebook page : “In all four events, intervention was not deemed necessary and the animals did leave the area without further sighting reports.”
