DESCRIPTION

Built in 1962 as a temporary structure, the open air Delacorte Theater in Central Park has established itself not just as a must-see park fixture, but as an incredibly popular and successful performance space. The venue is best known for hosting the free Shakespeare in the Park series by Joseph Papp Public Theater. The amphitheater seats 1,872 and the stage has a gorgeous backdrop of Turtle Pond and Belvedere Castle. Lines for Shakespeare can be extraordinarily long, with the first people queuing at dawn. The theater has hosted performances from high-profile names such as Meryl Streep, Denzel Washington, Natalie Portman, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Is there any better place to watch Shakespeare? Really? I doubt it. The free shows are one of the best theater events in the entire city. Get there early no matter what because the line gets crazy long.

You really have to camp out for the Shakespeare tickets, at least once. promise this to yourself.
