This Brooklyn Greenmarket is located just outside the entrance of Fort Greene park. Surrounded by trees and the beautiful brownstone neighborhood, it’s frequented by some of the best chefs in the city (and Ted Allen!). Overheard once by Chef Ross of the West Village staple Home, the Fort Greene farmers market is the best in the city. Year round, you can shop for everything from Evolutionary Organic’s micro greens to Glebocki Farm’s affordable staples like potatoes, onions and vegetables grown in NY Orange County’s famous black-dirt region to Cato Corner’s delicious cheese (including their famous Womanchego!) and Pura Vida’s fresh fish. Plus, every week, you can bring your kitchen scraps to be collected for composting by the Fort Greene Compost Project.

The Fort Greene Greenmarket isn’t my regular market, but if I’m in the area, I always go — even if I don’t need anything. The location really can’t be beat: beautiful brownstones on one side and the park on the other, with trees lining the sidewalk forming a leafy canopy. As for the vendors, there are a lot of great stands selling prepared foods, perfect for a picnic in the park!
