The New Museum was founded in 1977 with the mission to display and foster new art and new ideas. The museum is Manhattan’s only institution dedicated to contemporary art, and it is respected throughout the international art world for its adventurous exhibitions and curatorial program. The museum opened a new building designed by the Japanese firm Sanaa on the Bowery in 2007, and the innovative and beautiful building has been widely praised in the architecture world. From the outside, the building looks like a haphazardly stacked tower of lightweight silver boxes, and the museum uses the built-in ledges for skylights, a deck, and exterior art displays. It’s been said that the New Museum, and its new building, perfectly capture the spirit and culture of the city’s downtown art scene.

General admission is $12, seniors are $10, students are $8, and those under 18 are free.

The New Museum is cool and definitely pushes the limits of modern art with some really progressive exhibits but I have to take some points off because every time I go at least two of the five floors are closed.

I love what the New Museum stands for, but I have yet to experience a truly awesome art exhibit here. However, I do really love the rooftop terrace and the lobby cafe sells awesome organic treats.

This place could do more with what it has. My biggest complaint is that the space itself is unimpressive. They could have done more with a blank slate and the exhibits don’t help much. However the top floor viewing room is cool.

I agree with Brit. Sometimes the exhibitions at the New Museum feel like they take 15 minutes. I have a museum pass, but if I’d paid $12 I’d probably be a little disappointed. They do have a great book shop, and the Jeff Koons’ curated “Skin Fruit” exhibition was pretty incredible. I haven’t given up on it yet.
