Designed by the masterminds behind Central Park, Frederick Olmstead and Calvert Vaux, Prospect Park offers a peaceful escape from urban life. The 585 acre park boasts a 90-acre long meadow, 60-acre lake, Brooklyn’s only forest (complete with valleys, streams, and mini-waterfalls), and the nation’s first urban Audubon Center. Prospect Park is home to 30,000 trees, two-thirds of which are in the park’s natural woodland, and the Audubon Center hosts an array of hands-on nature and science activities for children and adults. Other activities include horseback riding, an ice skating rink, bbq areas, twilight bat tours, and a summer concert series.

Sigh, I love Prospect Park. The NY Times journalist fight about Prospect vs. Central Park was amazing and is so true. They rival each other quite nicely. I run through Prospect Park’s trails about 4 times a week and it never gets old. I live right next door but even if I didn’t I’d still venture out to spend time in the sheep’s meadow.

Every time I visit Prospect Park, I fall more in love with it. I live on the east side of the park, close to the Audubon Center, which is always bustling with activity. It’s wonderful on warm weekends when the lawns are filled with people playing games, but what’s even more spectacular is a visit in the middle of a day on a weekday — it’s like having the park to yourself.
