DESCRIPTION
Through exhibits, performances, artist talks, publication, and conferences, the Storefront for Art and Architecture works to advance innovative thinking in art, design, and architecture. The non-profit gallery was founded in 1982, and in 1993, its home base on Kenmare Street underwent a renovation to create a unique ground-floor exhibition space. The space has movable hinged facade panels that can be opened and closed to create different degrees of accessibility to the street and public. The triangular interior makes for an incredibly interesting display space, with it tapering from 20 feet to 3 feet. Storefront’s building, widely regarded as a contemporary architecture landmark, draws just as many visitors, if not more, as its exhibitions. Artists are encouraged to engage the space in their exhibits, with shows ranging from single artist site-specific installations to group shows examining new technologies and the forces that shape our environment.

Storefront for Art & Architecture is a special, unique gallery focusing on emerging / groundbreaking architectural design and conversation. The gallery design itself, by Steven Holl & Vito Acconci, is amazing – with moving wall panels that turn the gallery from interior space into an inviting street pavillion on Kenmare street. The space itself is tiny but the exhibits are always amazing, thanks to curator Joseph Grima\’s amazing eye.
The building itself is so neat. I love this area, and stopping in here on my way to La Esquina or Spring Street Natural
