With so much interest in locally-sourced food lately, it’s surprising that NYC’s largest produce distributor still doesn’t carry fruits and veggies from area farms. A group of 45 farmers and environmentalists thought that disconnect odd too, and this week sent the Hunts Point Market [4]in the Bronx a letter urging them [5] to make room for regional mid-sized farms [6] and give them the opportunity to sell their harvest in stores all over the five boroughs.

Recent real estate news noted that the Hunts Point Market [4] is in talks over a long-term lease and is looking to raise money for $350 million worth of renovations. What better way, local farmers thought, to raise funds than by including regional farmers in the new digs, creating a new wholesale sector? Supporters think it’s a perfect match considering that mid-sized farms are too small to afford the distributor’s commission [8] but too big for city farmer and green markets.

To that end, a coalition of 45 farmers and environmentalists, including actor Mark Rufalo [9], wrote a letter to New York City officials to seriously consider the addition. The Bronx cooperative [8] is still negotiating a lease deal, but is mostly worried local farmers may bring new competition and undersell larger suppliers. If plans work out and New York continues to go regional and sustainable, it could have one of the best produce distribution centers in the country!
