LowLine Underground Park Moves Forward with $150K in Funding and Full Scale Model

The Delancey Underground ‘s plans for the LowLine may have seemed like just a pipe dream before, but the exciting underground park is moving forward with two important updates. The organization just reached its $75,000 in 75 days fundraising goal and received a matching donation from an anonymous donor for a total of $150,000 towards the new space. The LowLine team has also begun construction on a full scale model of the underground greenway inside the Essex Street Market warehouse on Delancey, and we can’t wait to sneak a peek!
The LowLine is the brainchild of architect James Ramsey, the principal of RAAD , and Dan Barasch of technology and planning think-tank PopTech . The genius idea transforms a railway station that has been abandoned for nearly 60 years into a sustainable urban outlet focusing on subterranean photosynthesis. While underground greenery sounds tough to grow, the team plans to use high-tech fiber-optic lighting systems that channel natural daylight to the depths below to make the space bright, sunny, and welcoming. Lamp post-like solar collectors will also be placed on Delancey Street to help harvest natural light.
The project is obviously wildly popular with many New Yorkers and has also recently received endorsements from State Senator Daniel Sqaudron , Representative Nydia Velázquez, Speaker Sheldon Silver and of course, the green machine himself, Mayor Bloomberg . The scale model is expected to be finished by mid-September, right around the one year anniversary of the LowLine’s initial announcement.
