New York firm Macro Sea has released a new design that would turn the Brooklyn Navy Yard into a state-of-the-art hub for technology, innovation, design and prototyping. Called New Lab, the 84,000-square-foot space is slated to be completed by 2014 with the goal of spurring U.S. manufacturing jobs and becoming a national model for sustainable industrial parks. The lab will support exchange between between green manufacturing startups, research and development teams, academia and digital fabricators by offering a variety of workroom spaces from 500-square-foot studios to 7,500-square-foot offices and co-working spaces.
Macro Sea hopes the site will bring entrepreneurs, educators and businesses from the biotech and robotics industries together to collaborate and create new ideas that will induce sustainable growth, cut waste in the manufacturing process, and re-invest in American jobs.
Backers of this public-private partnership include Speaker Christine Quinn, the NYC Council, the Empire State Development Corporation Regional Council , Mayor Bloomberg , and others. Partners currently beta testing the New Leb concept at Building 280 at the yard include Within Lab , Terreform ONE , and Bioworks Institute .
Macro Sea also plans to develop ways to protect the campus, which experienced flooding during Hurricane Sandy , from future megastorms. They’ve already brought electrical wires from above and installed a hoist that would allow easy move of the equipment from the first floor to the second floor. Plans to create a slab flooring that can be wiped in the event of a surge are also in the works.
Alex Escamilla, senior project director at Macro Sea, explained to Fast Company : “We estimate 332 permanent jobs will come from New Lab on top of the 72 temporary construction jobs. The beauty of being in the Brooklyn Navy Yard is that, as these businesses grow, there is plenty of space for them to expand and hire more workers.”
