Two of the subtracted sections became more outdoor space for the family, one of which is a back deck that was added to the first level.

The primary goal was to achieve more natural light in the center of the brownstone and create a more immediate connection to the outdoors. The architects cut out sections of the brownstone’s core that increased the building’s open space, thus allowing light to shine deeper into the structure. In one section, both the floor and the walls were removed, making the windows stand two stories tall.

Two of the subtracted sections became more outdoor space for the family. A back deck was added to the first level, and a roof terrace that extends from the inside out was added to the top. The family filled the outdoor spaces with potted plants to make the areas blend with the surrounding trees. The home’s connection to the exterior is no longer just a backyard garden, but rather a more continuous interweaving of light and nature throughout the home.
