Yesterday, mayor Michael Bloomberg and Oklahoma clean energy entrepreneur T. Boone Pickens unveiled New York City’s first green mobile food truck powered by compressed natural gas. The Neapolitan Express Pizza truck serves up its slices with the help of Clean Energy Fuels and is all set to make its debut on to the streets of New York’s mobile food scene early next week.

“We see an opportunity to revolutionize the mobile food system in New York City,” said Neapolitan Express owner and NYC native Max Crespo, who plans to add another five trucks to his fleet soon. The pizzas are made with ingredients imported from Italy and use organic spices grown locally in New York. The pies, which sell for $7 a pop, cook in 90 seconds in 900 degree ovens.

“The truck produces almost three quarters less in greenhouse gas emissions than trucks that run on gasoline or diesel and that also reduces fuel costs by about 60 percent,” Bloomberg said during a press conference yesterday.

Bloomberg also took the time to touch on the need for the country to tap into natural gas safely and responsibly, seeing it as a viable alternative that can help us move away from coal and oil use for a cleaner planet. The city already operates three compressed natural gas stations which power 128 vehicles for the Department of Parks and Sanitation.
