This week Mayor de Blasio broke ground on the second phase of the Hunter’s Point South project located along Long Island City’s much-coveted waterfront. Phase Two of the mixed-used complex will see the construction of nearly 3,000 new apartments, 60 percent of which will be affordable housing. Phase One of HPS is well underway and upon completion, the massive Hunter’s Point South development will include 5,000 apartments, making it the largest affordable housing development built in NYC since the 1970s.

Phase Two of the affordable housing will include implementing new infrastructure at the Hunter’s Point South site such as adding a completely new street network with sewers, water main and utility work. The plan also calls for a beautiful 11-acre waterfront park. In addition to the new infrastructure and apartments, the project will also include 100,000 square feet of retail space and plenty of open green areas.

“We’re building a new neighborhood from the ground-up, from its streets to its parks to its transit. This is going to be the biggest affordable housing project built in a generation, and it’s going to ensure that this corner of Queens – despite all the market pressures driving up rents – will remain a diverse place for working people,” said Mayor Bill de Blasio at the groundbreaking ceremony.
