This month, instead of pushing through the summer crowds in Times Square, why not take a break and hang out in a Meeting Bowl? The Times Square Alliance has teamed up with Spanish collaborative mmmm to create a social space for friends and even strangers to gather and chat, promoting dialogue and good old fashioned friendliness in the Big Apple. A cool, temporary urban furniture installation, these quirky bowls serve up some much needed calm in the middle of the madness of Times Square.
The three giant bowls rest on a base that gently rocks to provide a mild floating sensation, and each bowl can seat up to eight adults. Made of thin slabs of recycled CNC cut fiber board, the bowls are at the same time an intimate, yet remain open to the views of the city. Visitors are invited to record their conversations and take pictures to upload to collaborative’s Facebook page.
In an aim to humanize the most frenetic part of the city, Times Square Alliance’s public art program works with new and innovative artists and arts-based curatorial groups to help keep Times Square clean, safe, and enjoyable. Installations are rotated every month to reflect the fruitful and ever-changing atmosphere of the city center.
Meeting Bowls is on view until September 16th.
