Although Morphosis has yet to unveil their design, there is speculation that there will be similarities to their gorgeous Cooper Union campus building in lower Manhattan. The new Cornell campus building will be the first of three academic buildings planned for Roosevelt Island. According to the Curbed, the structure will be 150,000 square feet and probably no more than eight stories. Thom Mayne is expected to have plans for the new building completed by November 2012, and a schematic design in March 2013.
This is a major step in an ambitious $2 billion project spanning two decades that will eventually accommodate more than 2,000 students. According to the New York Times, Mayne’s contribution to the campus, which could cost $150 million, is slated to break ground in 2014 and to be finished in time for the 2017 academic year. In addition to the three academic buildings, the campus will also boast three buildings devoted to R&D, another three for student housing and there will be a hotel and conference center.
Mr. Mayne told the New York Times that his first step is to begin discussions with Arup about designing a net-zero energy building that derives the majority of its power from geothermal and solar sources. Skidmore, Owings & Merrill are still responsible for designing the master plan.
