Gallery: nbART Unveils ‘Plan Ahe...

If you have yet to do your summer walk over the Williamsburg Bridge, tonight is the night. But instead of going over the bridge, head under it, where the North Brooklyn Public Art Coalition (nbART) is unveiling "Plan Ahead," an environmental street art installation by the famous graffiti knitter herself, Magda Sayeg.

Collaborating with the Open Space Alliance for North Brooklyn and the New York City Department of Transportation’s (DOT) Urban Art Program, “Plan Ahead” is a year-long installation of 300 iron rods on Kent Avenue between South 5th and South 6th Streets covered in colorful knit fabric.

Magda Sayeg is not your typical street artist. Instead of painting walls or tagging buildings, she covers city surfaces with small hand knit cozies. Her delicate touch brings a sense of humanity back to the concrete and steel of the city. Practically a celebrity in New York now, Sayeg is also known for her piece back in 2009, where she and other knitters covered 69 parking meters along Montague Street in Brooklyn.

The unveiling of Plan Ahead is happening tonight, August 31 at 6 o’clock, and a reception will follow at IndieScreen (289 Kent Avenue at South 2nd Street). The reception will include an open bar from 7-8, plus wine and light fare provided all evening by local Brooklyn businesses Brooklyn Oenology and Coney Island Catering. There is a $10 suggested donation.

The artwork will be a public installation for the next year.
