Yesterday, the North Brooklyn Public Art Coalition (nbART) announced their latest project that will tackle issues of pollution and civic duty in New York called the Newton Creek Armada. The interactive exhibition powered by a team of three artists — Laura Chipley, Nathan Kensinger, and Sarah Nelson Wright — will allow visitors to drive mini radio-controlled boats with underwater cameras around the surface of the highly polluted Newton Creek. Video of the images below the Superfund site’s murky surface will be projected on enormous screens at the site, giving people the opportunity to feel what it is like to be submerged and surrounded in the dirty water. The exhibition will be open for participation in the spring of 2012 and a gallery installation of underwater video stills will be on display in the fall.
The artists behind the massive public exhibition have had their fair share of experience in environmentally conscious art. Laura Chipley is the creator of a documentary called Deep Black Sea, which chronicles the aftermath of global oil spills; Nathan Kensinger is a well known NYC urban landscape photographer who captures mostly abandoned buildings and industrial wastelands; and Sarah Nelson Wright is the creator of Brooklyn Makes, a site-specific film about manufacturing in North Brooklyn. Together, with this exhibition they aim to create a dialogue about local pollution and action that can be taken to prevent its increase.
The North Brooklyn Public Art Coalition is a nonprofit arts organization dedicated to working with artists and the communities of Williamsburg, Greenpoint, and Bushwick to make and support public art and engagement.
