Instead of having to trek to Bryant Park, Chelsea Piers or Rockefeller Center, downtown Manhattanites will soon be able to enjoy their very own ice skating rink. The new venue, called the Liberty View Ice Rink, is set to open next week in Battery Park City and will allow skaters to hit the ice while overlooking the iconic Statue of Liberty.

The 60 by 120 foot rink was commissioned by The Battery Park City Authority, and rivals the rink at Rockefeller Center in size. The skating venue comes just in time to lift the spirits of Battery Park locals, who suffered extreme damage after Hurricane Sandy. Even though the South Ferry-Whitehall subway station is still closed due to hurricane repairs, the area is re-enlivening slowly but surely.

The rink, which is being built by Liberty View Ice, will also be environmentally friendly. Rather than harsh chemicals, the ice uses a corn-based liquid refrigerant, which won’t damage the soil or grass surrounding the rink should any leak out.

Water for the rink will be poured this week, and frozen in time to open sometime next week. Skating lessons and skate rentals will be available for children and adults alike, in addition to a snack bar. Kids 12 and under can skate for $7 all week, while adults pay $10 during the week and $15 on weekends.
