  • The Point Community Development Corporation in the Hunts Point section of the South Bronx recently installed a new 7,350-square-foot green roof atop its main facility to assist with stormwater run-off and provide a foundation for environmental education. The lightweight roof measures 2.5 inches in depth and weighs only 10-11 pounds per square foot when fully saturated with rainwater. Experts estimate that the new green roof will also have huge environmental benefits for the community, reducing stormwater runoff by more than 150,000 gallons annually.

New York Green Roofs was tasked with the responsibility of designing and stalling the Xero Flor XF301+2FL System Option. A 650-square-foot customized semi-intensive green roof was installed separately on a lower edition of the building measuring four to six inches in depth. The smaller roof will serve as The Point’s outdoor environmental classroom. Both installations will help to alleviate flooding of the organization’s courtyard and help to improve overall water quality in the Bronx River.

“The green roof symbolizes our commitment to sustainability and our dedication to improving the environment of the community,” said Maria Torres, president and chief executive officer of The Point. “Our green roof project includes a special section that serves as an outdoor classroom for environmental education.”

The recently installed project also included repair of the structural roof and a new waterproof roof membrane. Support and funding was provided by the New York State Office of the Attorney General and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.
