Despite numerous protests and opposition from celebrities like Sean Lennon and Yoko Ono, it appears that New York is in line to approve state-wide hydraulic fracturing, the highly controversial practice of using toxic chemicals and a gas drill to extract hard-to-reach natural resources found within the Earth. Also known as fracking, the practice carries the huge risk of poisoning waters and destroying other environmental resources. But for some, the prospect of discovering an abundance of local natural gas (reportedly enough to last two decades) has created a push for Governor Cuomo’s approval of fracking in Albany.
Though no official release has been made, an announcement and detailed plan are anticipated shortly. Drilling around the Marcellus Shale Formation, near the Pennsylvania border, where residents have largely been pro-fracking, is expected.
