New York City [3] Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced yesterday the addition of 70 new electric vehicles [4] to the official New York City transportation [5] fleet. The addition is made up of 50 Chevy Volts [6], 10 Ford Transit Connect Electric cargo vans and 10 Navi-star “E-star” electric utility trucks. The addition brings the city’s fleet up to 430 electric vehicles [4] making it the largest municipal low emissions fleet in the country. This emissions-free addition to New York is a part of Mayor Bloomberg’s PlaNYC initiative [7] to bring down the city’s air pollution and lower its carbon footprint.

“We will continue to lead by example, but we also must provide New Yorkers with tools to make environmentally friendly choices in their own lives,” Mayor Bloomberg told the crowd when he unveiled the shiny new Volt police cars and electric utility trucks. “When provided with the facts, people become far more likely to choose an electric vehicle [4]. Our job is to ensure the public has the facts, ensure they can make their own decisions and ensure that if they want to drive an electric vehicle, we are providing the infrastructure needed. It’s all part of our PlaNYC agenda to create a greener, greater New York City.”

New York is also working on bringing fully electric taxi cabs to the city streets next year. The city’s Taxi of Tomorrow [8] initiative will be testing out six Leaf EV provided by Nissan in 2012. A survey done by McKinsey & Company said that only 30 percent of New Yorkers are truly knowledgeable about the benefits of electric vehicles but that a further 21 percent would be inclined to buy one if they had the facts. Mayor Bloomberg [9] is leading by example and raising awareness about how our driving affects our health — our pocketbook — and the health of our planet.
