We’ve been covering the development of the massive Freshkills Park with great excitement, so you can imagine our delight when we learned that city officials want to fast track the installation of wind turbines in the park! At a meeting last night, the DEP Commissioner Cas Holloway told the Daily News, “Our teams were together just two days ago poring over a map of the landfill to identify what are the spaces [where] we think this is feasible to do.”

Holloway added that private companies will soon be asked to submit proposals for solar and wine energy projects in Freshkills and at other sites around the city. Mayor Bloomberg set a goal in 2008 to have 10 percent of the city’s energy needs come from wind power. During the meeting, Holloway said that the city has a solid strategy for generating green energy in NYC and that we’re going “to see movement on this pretty fast.”

The Wall Street Journal reported that the city is also working with private companies to install solar panels on five city-owned buildings Downtown. Proposals for the solar installations are due by June 29, and the city plans to select a company by the fall. Currently, ten other solar projects are underway in NYC, supported in part with federal funds.
