Gallery: NY <3 Boston: Illuminated Messages of Support for Boston Victi...

As the entire world mourns the victims of the Boston Marathon explosions that claimed the lives of three people and injured hundreds, one Brooklyn neighborhood decided to shine a little light in the midst of the darkness. This week, the Brooklyn Academy of Music’s Peter Jay Sharp building was transformed into a canvas of positive messages showing New York's support for Boston. Illuminating light art projected onto the building displayed a streaming loop of quotes from “Darkness Cannot Drive Out Darkness, Only Light Can Do That” to the simple but powerful "NY <3 B".

The streaming messages of hope and support for Boston were created by the NYC Light Brigade and The Illuminator Collective - a political art project featuring a cargo van equipped with video and audio projection that emerged out of the Occupy Wall Street movement.

“The feedback to it has been overwhelmingly positive, people loved it,” said Kyle Depew to AMNY, who helped set up the display. “People who were walking by said, ‘Thank you,’ people honked horns, people gave us handshakes, everyone felt really good,” he said, adding that national media attention multiplied the group’s show of support.

In addition to the illuminating lights covering the BAM building Tuesday evening, Brooklyn’s Borough Hall was illuminated in honor of all the victims and their families.
