We recently wrote about the Cornell NYCTech [4] facility coming to Roosevelt Island, and now we’re excited to say that NYC’s Columbia University has announced [5] it will be getting a new tech campus of its own. Even more interesting, the new Institute for Data Sciences and Engineering won’t exactly be “new.” Rather it will be housed within existing buildings at the University’s Morningside Heights and Washington Heights campuses, demonstrating the practicality and efficacy of renovating and retrofitting older buildings. The Columbia institute is expected to create more than 4,500 jobs in the next three decades as the institute works in conjunction with the Applied Sciences NYC [6] initiative to “dramatically increase New York City’s capacity for applied sciences and engineering while strengthening and transforming the City’s economy for generations.”

Columbia University’s Institute for Data Sciences and Engineering will receive up to $15 million in financial support from the Applied Sciences NYC initiative. While Cornell’s NYCTech Institute is to be housed within a brand new state of the art green campus [8] on Roosevelt Island, Columbia’s program will have their new digs within the university’s existing buildings. To be developed in two phases, the first phase will see the establishment of 44,000 square feet of facilities at Columbia’s Morningside Heights campus with completion slated for August 2016. The second phase is expected to extend the Institute into space at the Columbia University Medical Center (part of the Audubon Business and Technology Center) in Washington Heights.

Launched in 2010, the Applied Sciences NYC Initiative seeks to provide “unparalleled opportunity to build or expand world-class applied sciences and engineering campuses in New York City.” Announcing the launch of Columbia University’s participation in the rapidly developing initiative, Deputy Mayor Steel explained [9] “Columbia’s investment in applied sciences and engineering will also mean that Morningside Heights and Manhattanville are now poised to join neighborhoods like Flatiron, Chelsea, DUMBO, and Long Island City as emerging tech centers, which means jobs and investment in these neighborhoods.”
