Although many believe that NYC pizza is a little slice of heaven here on earth, we might soon get to hear it from God's righthand man, the pope, himself. It has been rumored that the ever-popular Pope Francis might be stopping by one of the Big Apple's famous pizzerias to satisfy his carnal pie craving. And according to the NY Post, some of the city's most creative pizza makers will attempt to tempt the pontiff with personalized "Pope Pizzas" featuring his papal image. Back in March, Pope Francis claimed that one thing he missed about life before his papacy was the ability to sneak out for a quick slice, telling a Mexican television station in March, “The only thing I would like is to go out one day, without being recognized, and go to a pizzeria for a pizza.”
With the papal taste buds in mind, some of NYC’s most famous pizza shops are vying to be the pope’s pie of choice on his official NYC visit. Namely, Bleecker Street Pizza, whose portrait of Pope Francis crafted out of cheese, anchovies and peppers, is wonderfully artistic.
Ribalta co-owners Pasquale Cozzolino and Rosario Procino also made a special Vatican-themed pie, complete with yellow tomatoes and buffalo mozzarella representing the colors of the Vatican. A percentage of the pie sales will benefit the No Kid Hungry program.
Also in homage of the papal visit, Paulie Gee‘s pizzeria created the “$15 Papa Frankie”, a mouth-watering, wood-fired white pie topped with a cross of yellow and red cherry tomatoes.
