Omonia Cafe [4] in Astoria has been a Queens [5] staple for Greek pastries, coffee and people watching for years. Now the cafe owners are expanding their tasty brand with Omonia Bakery, a new sweet spot designed by New York’s Bluarch Architecture [6]. Using LED lighting and cedar spheres to create an undulating installation, Bluarch has transformed the space into an organic and modern cafe as sweet as the treats it sells.

Bluarch says the design was meant to “celebrate indulgence.” Coinciding with the decadent sweets that Omonia supplies, Bluarch lined the cafe [7]’s ceiling and sloping down the walls with ¼ inch Bisazza tiles [8] in a rich chocolate color. Bluarch took an artistic approach to the lighting system. Emerging from the ceiling in groups are a series of ambient six inch light bulbs, jutting vertically from the ceiling’s surface. Adding to the effect of an art installation, Bluarch then hung wooden spheres made from red cedar on cords in formation around the tube light bulbs [9]. The orbs wind around the ceiling to the back of the cafe, where they meet an open glass-encased kitchen, where the customers can see the magic of making Omonia’s yummy treats.

The sloping chocolate brown tiling of the ceiling is met mid-wall with shelving and LED lights [10], that stretch the length of the cafe. Omonia also has a pre-existing LED light [11] feature. The facade of the building has been lit by color changing LED lights, which transition through rainbow colors and were designed by Nova Vision New York. Omonia’s warm modern interior perfectly complements their famous baklava and Greek Frappe.
