Representatives of the Passivhaus Institut are opening their first stateside offices in New York City in order to facilitate training in Passive House principles. The Irish-based Passive House Academy (PHA) has been providing classes and seminars on Passive House for the last couple of years in the US, but they will now have a full-time presence with a base in the Big Apple. The PHA will offer Passive House Certifier training and building science courses throughout the country to anyone interested in learning how to build in line with Passive House‘s incredibly efficient building standards.

PHA has been aggressively courting prospective passive house designers and builders by filling the void that resulted from the breakup of PHI and Passive House Institute US. The group provides a wide range of training – from intermediate building science courses focused on issues like thermal bridging and a course for contractors, to advanced training to prepare individuals for the rigorous Passive House certifier examination. PHA also has a good line of videos explaining how Passive House works, along with a walk through of the building system and its benefits.

Tomas O’Leary, co-founder of PHA recently tweeted: “Dinner bill in modest restaurant with two friends last night equates to 50% of our annual heating bill. Puts things in perspective.” The organization aims to get as many people as they can to learn how to build Passive Houses in the US in order to make a real energy impact.
