Pier 6 of Brooklyn Bridge Park Officially Opens, Offers Native Plantings & Sand Volleyball Courts

It was a great Memorial Day weekend in Brooklyn , and it wasn’t just because of the beautiful summer weather. The expansion of the Brooklyn Bridge Park on Pier 6 was finally completed on Saturday morning, offering an additional 1.8 acres of sand volleyball courts, lighted pathways, and two 15,000-square-foot lawns with native plants and trees. The extension also includes an outdoor food court built with longleaf yellow pine salvaged from the park.
The plaza’s four food vendors will be a milk shake and sandwich truck, a hot dog stand, an organic ice cream parlor, and an Uncle Louie G’s Italian Ices. Other vendors like Blue Marble Ice Cream, Brooklyn Bridge Wine Bar, Calexico Carne Asada, and Ditch Plains Drop-In, will also be returning this season as well.
Another interesting addition to the park will be Jane’s Carousel , which will open by the end of the summer in a pavilion designed by French architect Jean Nouvel . The Empire Fulton Ferry will also begin stopping at the north end of the park before the end of the summer. As if that isn’t enough, next spring will see the opening of three new recreational fields.
Despite all the many wonderful activities and amenities available at the park , this only makes up a small portion of other future plans the city has in store for the waterfront space — only two-thirds of the entire park will be complete by 2013. The City took over the park’s construction from the state last year and will contribute $50 million towards the park’s completion. So far, $233 million has been spent on the park’s construction.
