Planters Grove Park Designed by Ken Smith Coming to the Lower East Side

While we’re still daydreaming about the Low Line park proposed for the Lower East Side , the neighborhood will be breaking ground on another new park this Monday, October 3rd. While smaller and less fantastical (it’s above ground like a normal park), the new green space will be located in an underused lot in NYCHA’s Lillian Wald Houses . The park is sponsored by Planters as part of the company’s “Naturally Remarkable ” tour, where the snack food company transforms underutilized urban spaces into vibrant green lots. The small park will be designed by noted landscape architect Ken Smith , and local community group Green City Force will help with its construction.
The park will be the third Grove built by Planters this year; two others are in Washington, D.C. and New Orleans . Details about the NYC Grove are sparse, but according to a press release that Bowery Boogie received, it will have a variety of sustainable elements. The rendering shows what look like different patches of plantings, most likely native to the area, given Smith’s previous work — he did the landscaping for the East River Waterfront Esplanade and created MoMA’s rooftop garden .
Groundbreaking of the new Grove takes place this coming Monday, October 3 with an official 10 a.m. ceremony that will be attended by Congresswoman Nydia M. Velázquez and representatives from NYCHA. Community planting in the garden will follow immediately after, so prepare to get your hands dirty if you’re planning to go!
