The Pratt Institute [4], long a leader in sustainable design education, officially opened its new beautiful and sustainably designed digital arts building, complete with a green roof [5] and solar panels. The six-story, 120,000 square foot Myrtle Hall [6] is expected to meet the LEED Gold [7] standard, which would make it Brooklyn’s first ever higher education building to receive any LEED certification.

WASA/Studio A [8] beat out several other architecture firms in a highly competitive bidding process. The project’s design architect, Jack Esterson, is a graduate of the Pratt’s School of Architecture [9] and a long-time resident of Clinton Hill, the home of Pratt’s campus. “Our building design is meant to explore the relationship between Pratt — a great New York institution — and the larger community within which it resides,” said Esterson. “The development of the two principal wall systems, tied together by the transparent central gathering space, is meant to be a metaphor for that relationship.”
