Queens-based First World Trash uses recycled billboards and seatbelts to create fun bags and accessories that are not only durable, but also speak to our over-consumption of goods and materials. We first discovered FWT at the New York International Gift Fair and they recently shared their newest seasonal addition with us – a summer wine tote perfect for carrying bottles of vino to picnics in the park. The useful tote is made from repurposed vinyl billboards, bike inner tubes and discarded seatbelts, making it waterproof and able to withstand wear and tear.
The tote is 15-inches tall, 6-inches deep and 12-inches wide and has a collapsible six wine bottle holder inside, so you can easily carry enough for the party or unsnap several of the dividers and use the tote to carry other treats as well. Beyond the dividers, the tote features two, lined 9-inch zipper pockets to help safeguard smaller items such as keys, a phone, your wallet or a grocery list.
The bag can also be carried in multiple ways. Using the two handles made from seatbelts that are sewn around the underside of the bag, the tote can be easily carried at your side. If you’re more of an over-the-shoulder type person, a longer, removable strap also made from a recycled seat belt provides just the right length for the tote to be worn as a satchel.
If you’re interesting in picking up one of these totes for yourself, they’re available locally at Chelsea Wine Vault in New York City and retail for $110.
