Registration for the 2012 Land Art Generator Initiative [2] design competition that will take place at Freshkills Park [3] is now open! In its partnership with New York City’s Department of Parks & Recreation, the competition will seek one exciting design for a piece of public art that will also produce clean energy. So if you’re an artist or visionary and would love to see your design come to life in New York, definitely check it out (the $20,000 in award money is a plus too!).

Green minded designers, artists, engineers, architects, landscapers, students, scientists and urban planners are encouraged to band together and submit their wildest ideas for the new park [5] that sits atop the former Fresh Kills landfill on Staten Island [6]. Land Art Generator Initiative, headed by husband and wife team Robert Ferry and Elizabeth Monoian, will choose the design that best shows that renewable energy can be beautiful [7]– along with the feasibility and logistics of the design’s ability to also create energy.

Applicants should submit designs that combine inspiring visuals with contemplation of eco systems [8], natural resources and consumption. The designs should also be able to effectively capture renewable energy [9], be it solar, wind or geothermic, and be able to store and transmit the energy to a connected power grid set up by LAGI.

The inaugural LAGI contest in 2010 was won by Lunar Cubit pyramids [10]. Unlike other contests, entry is free, and there is also a separate category for high school students. One first place winner will get $15,000, and $4,000 will go to a second place winner! Applicants have until July 1, 2012 to submit their materials to create an innovative project that will power New York City [11] with art.
