What do you do when you’ve been lobbying for a neighborhood park for years to no avail? How about creating your own pop-up park in protest? That’s what a group called Friends of 20th Street Park [2] is planning to do at an area in Chelsea on West 20th Street that has been home to an unused Department of Sanitation [3] lot for years. The organization, which has been advocating to transform the unused space into a park for years, says they are are going to make a pop-up renegade park [4] in protest of the city’s inaction. The peaceful protest will gather hundreds of green-wearing locals this Sunday on the vacant lot at 136 West 20th Street.

Friends of the 20th Street Park plans to participate in regular park-like activities during their pop-up park [6] occupation. Participants are encouraged to play catch, bring a picnic blanket or read a book in the lot, to show how the area could be replanted and used as public space. In the past, the group has staged protests, but this active adaptation approach will be the first time they attempt such an event.

The group calls their peaceful occupation a “play-in” and hopes to inspire Community Board 4 to re-evaluate the sanitation lot, and begin exploring options to make it a small park for the community to enjoy [7].
