The Riverside Clay Tennis Club [3] has been making do (or doodoo, depending on how you want to look at it) with a set of unsavory port-o-potties, but is now looking to upgrade. Cook + Fox Architects [4] has designed the club a new eco-friendly, off-the-grid restroom facility [5], which will be solar-powered and help fertilize an adjacent wildflower garden [6]. The proposed public restroom could bring some very needed relief to the sports center but they’re currently still looking for funding to build it.

The new bathrooms will feature toilets that will not only compost waste, but then transform it into flower food which would then be pumped into an elevated wildflower garden. Literally turning poop into petunias [8], the facility would be powered by solar panels, which would also help power the Riverside Clay Tennis Club offices. The project could serve as a model for public restrooms [9] moving forward, working as a comfort facility for park users, while aiding in the longevity and health of the plantlife in the park itself.

The project is estimated to cost around $6 million, of which $1.2 million is already pledged by City Councilwoman Gale Brewer. The Riverside Clay Tennis Club hopes to gather the rest from wealthy tennis enthusiasts, other private donors  and state and federal funding.
