This week, the Rockwell Group announced exciting plans to build a treehouse-inspired Imagination Playground [4] in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Brownsville. The firm is working with NYC Parks to transform a 1.5-acre section of Betsy Head Park [5] into an active playground to encourage kid-friendly activity and play outdoors. The design of the new playground will feature a winding ramp that snakes around London Plane trees, jungle gyms that spill out into an open area and much more. Construction on the playground is set to begin in spring 2014 and the facility is expected to open by 2015.

Funded by government subsidies supported by Mayor Bloomberg, Borough President Markowitz and Council Member Mealy, the $3.92 million playground is being designed completely pro-bono by landscape architecture firm MKW + Associates [7] and the Rockwell Group [8].  The Brooklyn-based playground will be the second Imagination Playground (the first is at Burling Slip [9] in Manhattan) to be built worldwide.

“The Imagination Playground concept allows children to exercise their minds, as well as their bodies,” said City Parks Commissioner Veronica White to the New York Post [10]. “David Rockwell’s innovative design at the Burling Slip site of the South Street Seaport has proved a tremendous success and we are thrilled that he is working with us to introduce a vibrant new permanent play space for children here in Brownsville’s Betsy Head Park. Special thanks to Council Member Mealy and Borough President Markowitz for allocating the capital funds for this imaginative oasis of play.”

Partner David Rockwell founded Imagination Playground [11] in partnership with NYC Parks and KaBOOM, to provide an unstructured play area for children, cheaply, that prompts children to manipulate their environment and create a play space of their own with sand, water and loose parts. Giant foam blocs, mats, fabric and crates available to children that come to play give them the potential to build, grow and explore a world of possibilities.
