The Cornell Tech Campus took a giant leap forward with Community Board 8’s approval, and can finally start making plans to break ground. The undeveloped part of Roosevelt Island will get a face lift by Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, who are in charge of the campus’ master plan. A new pedestrian walk connecting the campus with the city, a large public green, an academic building, a residence hall, hotel facilities and office suites will sprout up on the island.
The energy-neutral academic building was designed by architecture firm Morphosis. Spanning the entire rooftop of the building, a photovoltaic canopy is planned to produce enough energy to make the complex independent of the grid.
With the community board’s green light, construction on Roosevelt Island is expected to begin in 2014. The sprawling campus is hoped to be opened for classes in 2017, and fully completed in 2037.
