Yesterday, the New York State Senate approved a bill encouraging the building of more green homes in the state. Initially ntroduced by Senator Mark Grisianti in 2012, the bill would allow local municipalities to authorize a 35 percent tax exemption on environmentally friendly real property for 20 years. Through this legislation, Grisianti hopes to incentivize builders to make the investment in green homes, which may be initially more costly.

The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art has changed extensively over the past few years, and this morning the school announced that after 150 years of offering a free education, it is planning to charge a tuition. The prestigious school is known mainly for two things – turning out industry giants like Daniel Libeskind, Milton Glaser and Alex Katz and being one of the last tuition-free colleges in the United States. But after two years of financial struggles and intense debate, the Union has decided to implement a “sliding scale” tuition starting in 2014.

Macchiatos, lattes, frappes and other sweet beverages will also fall under the ban, which could mean that customers at food chains like Dunkin’ Donuts and McDonald’s won’t be able to purchase their drinks with sugar already added.

DUMBO’s Two Trees Management Company has a new vision for the iconic Domino Sugar Refinery on Williamsburg’s waterfront. The company bought the property in 2012 with plans to renovate, but has just released an alternative plan designed by SHoP Architects that provides green space, jobs, affordable housing, and the potential to give more back to the South Williamsburg community. The revised plan takes months of community meetings into consideration, creating a mixed-use neighborhood that also protects the longevity of the undeveloped area.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg isn’t wasting any time on combating climate change and greening the Big Apple as his third term comes to a close. Recently, he signed three new critical pieces of green legislation authored by Councilmember James F. Gennaro (D-Fresh Meadows), chairman of the Council’s Committee on Environmental Protection, into law. The three new laws spell out critical changes and improvements the city will implement in an effort to protect the city from future environmental havoc and create an open space system that will educate residents on how they can do their part to combat climate change.

Mets owners Fred Wilpon and Saul Katz are all for the redevelopment of the industrial Willets Point neighborhood next to Citi Field – as long as it includes a Las Vegas-style casino. Last year, Mayor Bloomberg announced plans to overhaul the area into a LEED-seeking complex complete with a mall, movie theaters, and low-income housing, but Wilpon and Katz had a different proposal. They wanted to transform the area into a gambling strip that would rake in money to help them recoup the $162 million they lost in the Bernie Madoff Ponzi scheme scandal, but it seems like their plans have been dashed – for now.

Brooklynites value their books, but some branches of the Brooklyn Public Library just aren’t seeing any play. Aging, in disrepair and underused, these satellite libraries were built in the early 1900s before most neighborhoods developed and have since become mini ghost towns. Rather than spending $230 million for the needed repairs, BPL is considering shutting down its less popular branches, which means that some of these historic buildings could become available for other types of businesses.

Porcelanosa, a premiere European manufacturer of ceramic and porcelain tile, has announced its plans to renovate its flagship showroom in the Commodore Criterion building in Midtown Manhattan. To complete the job, they brought in Foster + Partners to conceptualize a refurbished space that respects the historic aspects of the building’s facade while updating the interior. The new design enhances the experience of the expansive showroom inside, while radically improving the space’s energy performance.
