Last year, the Tribute of Light symbolically commemorated the tenth anniversary of the September 11th attacks, but those same celestial beams caused flocks of migrating birds to become severely disoriented. Over 10,000 birds were drawn to the beams of light, where they became confused and trapped. The birds were finally able to continue their journey when the beams were shut off for twenty minute intervals. Each year, city lights, skyscrapers, and urban hustle and bustle endanger tens of thousands of migrating birds — but can anything be done to remedy the problem?

Next month on September 27, Sotheby’s will be auctioning off some heirlooms that are quite different from the ones they usually showcase: tomatoes, squash, cucumbers, and other edibles from local New York City area farms! The geese saga continues as the New York City Department of Environmental Protection announced last week an expected round up of 700 to 800 Canada geese from parks in and around the city. The City, however, refuses to comment on when or where the roundup will take place, but there is some good news to be had — the geese living in Prospect Park will not be culled.

That’s right – the Prospect Park geese are making headlines once again! After huge protests and outcry from local residents about the city’s mass slaughter of geese at Prospect Park last summer, the Department of Environmental Protection has decided that instead of dumping the bodies in a landfill, this year’s captured geese will be sent to Pennsylvania, where they will be slaughtered and distributed to food banks to feed the hungry. What do you think? Is this a better solution or is exterminating the geese still inhumane and unnecessary?

The Prospect Park geese are at the center of attention, yet again. A group of Brooklyn residents, business owners, and wildlife advocates have devised a program to stand guard over the Prospect Park geese at all hours of the day to prevent federal officials from using mass extermination methods as a way of maintaining the geese population. Armed with binoculars, cameras, and video recording equipment, the pro-geese group is determined to prevent another massacre like last summer’s.

The Prospect Park geese debate isn’t over yet. Councilmen Brad Lander and Steve Levin (D–Park Slope) are introducing new legislation to that would prevent another geese slaughter this summer. The proposed bill came in response to protests against last summer’s geese slaughter, which many believe was done secretly and without community consent. Under the legislation, the city would be required to consider public opinion before taking any “wildlife management” actions. Although the geese massacre was carried out due to aviation safety concerns in response to the US Airways Flight 1549 crash on the Hudson River, many within the community were shocked by the systematic nature of the execution, which occurred in the middle of the night.

It looks like the city’s at it again. Less then a year ago, federal agents from the USDA gathered close to 300 geese in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park and exterminated them, and now the NYC Department of Sanitation is hiring a biologist from the USDA in an effort to track the “wildlife hazards” of Prospect Park geese. The Brooklyn Paper reports that although the exact duties of the biologist are unclear, USDA staff with the same title have used rifles in Ohio, Alaska, and Iraq to keep geese populations under control, especially near airports. Just last week, residents gathered in the park to protest the 2010 geese gassing, and now it looks like another killing may be in the works.

Activists gathered outside of the Prospect Park Gala yesterday in protest of last year’s slaughter of  hundreds of geese by federal agents. On the morning of July 8, 2010, in response to aviation safety concerns, federal Wildlife Services staff boxed up more than 250 geese, including their young, and tossed them into gas chambers. The events of that day were confirmed by Carol Bannerman, a Department of Agriculture spokesperson, in relation to a city wide effort to exterminate geese within a seven mile radius of LaGuardia and JFK airports. The city had put the geese under scrutiny last year after Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger flew into a large flock of birds, disabling both engines, and forcing US Airways Flight 1549 to land on the Hudson River.
