This summer, photography lovers will be treated to a unique experience: United Photo Industries [3]‘ pop-up Photoville [4], which lands in Brooklyn Bridge Park [5] on June 22. The innovative photography experience will transform 30 shipping containers [6] into a village of photography galleries, showing some of New York’s best and brightest photographers. Located on the Pier 3 Uplands, the photo park will introduce the public to area artists — and it’s completely free!

The Pier 3 Uplands will be transformed into the cargotecture village, complete with a picnic area, greenhouse installation [7], dog park, and even a beer garden. The container buildings [8] will form a miniature neighborhood, encircling a common area for visitors to relax, picnic, chat with artists, and meet other park goers. Photoville will also serve as a community education haven, offering lectures, hands-on workshops, demos, nighttime projections, and curated exhibitions throughout the summer weekends.

Photographers can participate [9] by applying to exhibition their work in one of the many freight containers, or by entering a contest sponsored by Photo District News and Brooklyn Bridge Park. The contest will help curate a 1,000 foot long pubic fence (aptly called “The Fence”) that will be decked out with oversized prints of selected photographs.

Photoville will be an exciting destination this summer for both art and park lovers, with an estimated 300,000 anticipated visitors. You can get a taste of the village by checking out more pictures of United Photo Industries’ Foto Pods [10] at the 2011 Dumbo Arts Festival. Photoville opens on June 22 and runs through July 1.
