It is bad enough that people steal iPhones [3] on street corners and snatch wallets on the subway – do they really have to steal away a summer of green transportation [4] from kids in Queens? A soulless thief — or a herd of them — reportedly just stole 35 bikes, worth $10,000, from Bike New York [5] a non-profit organization that promotes bike safety and bicycle riding. The non-profit offers free rides to local children and residents throughout the summer and due to the theft will now have to cancel their Flushing Park program in Queens [6]. No bikes, no fun.

In addition to promoting general bike safety, teaching lessons, and giving free bike rides, Bike New York [5]is the organization that puts on the annual TD Bank Five Boro Bike Tour [7], the largest bike event in the US. The bike tour covers 42 miles of traffic-free roadways in New York City’s five boroughs and has roughly 32,000 participants. Despite their high profile, they are still a non-profit, and don’t have $10,000 lying around to replace the stolen bicycles.

“We can’t afford to take the hit,” Ken Podziba, the President and CEO of Bike New York, told ABC News. “It means we had to cancel the program at Flushing Meadows Park,” he said.

According to New York City police reports, crime is up in city parks by nearly 25 percent in the past year. The bikes in question were stolen from a green container that was located inside Flushing Meadows Park [8]. Undoubtedly, the crime was committed by more than one individual who knew exactly where the bikes were located.
