Southampton Plastic Bag Ban is Now in Effect!
Posted By Molly Cotter On November 7, 2011 @ 12:00 pm In News | 1 Comment
The Hamptons are often written about because of the lavish summer homes and exclusive beach parties, but this past weekend, Southampton , NY made headlines by being one of the first summer towns to pass an extremely green initiative. As of yesterday, plastic bags are banned from the entire town of Southampton. The bill, passed in April, bans plastic bags used in grocery and drug stores, adding Southampton to the growing list of U.S. cities that are helping to eliminate these ubiquitous nuisances from our waste stream.
Heavy plastic bags and those made for produce are exempt from the law. Otherwise, any violation can result in fines up to $1,000. The ban was approved by most Southampton residents and businesses. Though paper bags are still available, Liz Plouff, Southampton’s sustainability coordinator told press that the goal of this city-wide ban is to encourage consumers to bring along their own reusable bags while shopping.
Other towns like East Hampton Village and Southampton Town are considering to follow suit.
