Gallery: Southampton Plastic Bag Ban is Now in Effect!

The Hamptons are often written about because of the lavish summer homes and exclusive beach parties, but this past weekend, Southampton, NY made headlines by being one of the first summer towns to pass an extremely green initiative. As of yesterday, plastic bags are banned from the entire town of Southampton. The bill, passed in April, bans plastic bags used in grocery and drug stores, adding Southampton to the growing list of U.S. cities that are helping to eliminate these ubiquitous nuisances from our waste stream.

    There is a downside to reusable shopping bags. My wife is a cashier at Wal-Mart. She has had customers bring in shopping bags covered with cat hair (she’s allergic) and other (unknown) things. If you use reusable shopping bags, please be considerate of the other people that will have to handle them.
