Created by Alex Weber, the Green Partition [11] is part living wall, part communal seating. Using modular planters made from recycled cork [12] board and recycled plywood, Weber created an interesting space divider that’s filled with natural life. The plants each have room to grow in their own cube, leaving openings for light to pass through, resulting in eye-catching lighting and shadow effects. The wall is set atop a base made from corrugated cardboard and recycled wood that juts out from the wall, creating benches where people can gather.

Anthony Di Mari’s Safety Fence Chair [13] converts found materials from construction sites — the mesh-like plastic fences and rebar — into simple, comfortable chairs. He forms the frame by bending the rebar, then repeatedly wraps the fencing material around the metal to create a sturdy seat. The chairs can take on a variety of shapes, thanks to the ability to bend rebar at a number of different angles and the variety of colors of safety fences. Di Mari [10]takes a cheap, synthetic materials bound for the landfill and elevates and redefines its use.

Using straw bale rope, recycled wood, and recycled fabric, designer Sooho Kim created the Sewn Bench [14]. Two recycled wood panels that have hole cut out provide the structure for the bench, and the rope and fabric are woven through the holes to create the seat. The rope can be replace with another natural material, like bamboo [15], and the fabric adds a nice pop of color to otherwise natural piece.

Re-Plant [16] is an easy to create, interactive bench and shelf made from a series of planters. The structure is made up of a couple dozen ceramic planters that have had holes drilled in them. They are connected by rope to form a partition of openings, where live plants will grow. Extra planters will be added on the edge of the structure to create seating areas. “The idea of Re-Plant is to pollinate the spaces, having the possibility to create different kinds of furniture depending on the necessities,” writes the design team [16], Rosa Munar and Andres G. de los Salmones.

Aptly named the Green Chair [17], Sahar Mohamed’s winning piece is a geometric chair constructed from plywood and painted a shocking lime green. From the front, the chair looks rather simple, but from the side, you see its cut-out structure that creates a pocket of storage space underneath.

The ornate Xylem Garden Chair [18] by Alan Lambert looks like something straight out of the Secret Garden [19]. Drawing inspiration from the vein system of leaves, Lambert hand painted the wooden pieces of the chair. The pieces are made from 2x3s that were placed next to each other, then sawed into the desired shape. The base is created with two rounded pieces that fit together with bolts and wooden rods, allowing the whole piece to rock.

If you want to test out the pieces and see them for yourself, don’t miss the NEW New York Block Party [5]! The fun starts Saturday at 11 a.m. N. 11th Street between Wythe and Berry Streets in front of the Brooklyn Brewery in Williamsburg (some events, like the yoga classes, will begin before the festival, so check the schedule [20]).
