If you love the Union Square Greenmarket, you’ll love the new Haven’s Kitchen just a few blocks away. Occupying a historic carriage house on 17th Street, Haven’s Kitchen is a veritable sustainable food wonderland, offering cooking classes, specialty foods, and freshly-made food from a café. Founded by Alison Schneider, the collective’s mission is to show New York that "eating sustainably is synonymous with eating well."
The all-encompassing retreat has everything a foodie could ask for. Inside you can learn to cook, host a fabulous party, buy goodies for yourself and friends, or simply enjoy a cup of La Colombe coffee and an organic scone. The kitchen is stocked with local sustainable produce that Haven’s Kitchen buys from small and mid-sized farms. Menus are seasonal, working with fresh picked ingredients and celebrating the bounty of the day year round. Guests will experience the palatable benefits of fresh food, and see that agriculture and good eating are inseparable.
If you want to stop by for a cup of tea, the cozy carriage house is outfitted with gorgeous vintage and new linens, serving pieces and housewares that create a quaint and relaxing atmosphere. Local specialty goods are also sold in the market area, supporting New York area artisans.
Classes will be hosted by staff and popular chefs and geared toward healthy living. Running throughout the day, the kitchen will help you create that perfect vegetarian broth from scratch, or teach you how to mix delicious old timey cocktails. With Haven’s Kitchen classes, guests will learn about delicious sustainable recipes which they can then share with loved ones, and possibly start a new tradition of cooking for friends.
Haven’s Kitchen’s classes and tastings starting on January 23rd. Monthly supper club dinners, hosted by some of the city’s finest chefs, will begin next month and Spring will bring brunch. Treat yourself and stop by the sustainable food oasis starting today!
