Louis Lim’s Round&Round is a Circular Bench Made of Reclaimed NYC Wood

Louis Lim's Round&Round bench is a circular wooden seat with a fun secret - a discreet drawer tucked away within the design. Unveiled at 12x12 during New York Design Week, the unconventional seat is made of reclaimed wood found in NYC. At first glance, the bench appears to be a singular solid structure, but then a storage unit pulls out from inside to reveal a spacious area to hide away bits and pieces.

Verdant PicNYC Table is Topped with Living Growing Grass

Verdant PicNYC Table is Topped with Living Growing Grass

Who needs Central Park when you've got a grass-topped table that makes every meal a picnic? Okay, we still love Central Park, but on days when you can't go out to play, Haiko Cornelissen's PicNYC Table is a breath of fresh air. Unlike other faux foliage-filled designs we've seen, the PicNYC table features living, growing greenery, and you aren't just limited to growing grass. Spotted at the Wanted Design exhibition during NY Design Week, the clever double-duty piece can be planted with flowers or even herbs to pick and sprinkle right onto your meal.

Takeshi Miyakawa Arrested After His Light Installations Are Mistaken For Bombs During NYDW

Takeshi Miyakawa Arrested After His Light Installations Are Mistaken For Bombs During NYDW

Designers across the city have been attracting furniture and art-lovers with their work during New York Design Week, but a series of sculptural installations by Takeshi Miyakawa caught some rather unwanted attention – the NYPD’s. The I LOVE NY shopping bag-shaped sculptures caused a real stir over the weekend when they were mistaken for bombs by the cops. The ironically very peaceful bags were adapted into glowing sculptures to light up the city’s streets but instead of garnering praise for his thoughtful installation, the Brooklyn-based designer was arrested late Saturday night for “planting false bombs.”

Fashion Designer Joann Berman Creates Trippy 3D Furniture from Vintage Sofas in Queens

Native New Yorker Joann Berman has dressed the likes of Michael Jackson, Diddy, Salt-n-Pepa and Jodeci, but now she's focusing on a client that's a little bit closer to home - your home, that is. The fashion designer's trippy aesthetic and talent for transforming old into new earned her the moniker "the reigning queen of reconstruction," and now she has turned her sights to furniture design with a bevy of bespoke chaises, couches and sidechairs in retina-searing hues. Screened with 3D images that will have you wondering exactly what kind of mushrooms were in your marsala, the custom-made line is made of upcycled vintage furniture that is printed in Long Island City, Queens. We recently visited JoJo at her Bushwick, Brooklyn studios to find out more about these one-of-a-kind treasures.

31 & Change Turns Old Chairs Into Bold Retro Benches

Walk down any New York sidewalk and you’re bound to see a broken chair that’s been callously thrown street side. Bastard chairs are a dime a dozen, and we tend to cast them off into dumpster doom without a care, but Brooklyn’s 31 & Change is changing all of that with their Greene Ave. Benches. The design studio is making it their mission to rescue these orphan chairs, upcycling them into a one-of-a-kind benches fit for any space.

War Craft Collection: Uhuru Design Upcycles Battleship Wood into Beautiful Furniture

War Craft Collection: Uhuru Design Upcycles Battleship Wood into Beautiful Furniture

There’s little that we like more than awesome eco-friendly products made by local designers right here in New York City, so you can imagine our delight when we discovered the War Craft Collection by Uhuru, a line of furniture created with used deck wood from the USS North Carolina. We fell in love the Brooklyn design studio long ago, thanks to their gorgeous sustainable designs and knack for weaving local history into their pieces, like in the Coney Island Line, which they created from worn boardwalk planks. This time, Uhuru used wood from a decorated WWII battleship that was constructed in the Brooklyn Navy Yard to create a limited addition line of furniture that pays homage to its source material with clean lines and industrial shapes.
