Located next to the World Financial Center, the hotel features a light-filled atrium and sustainable design, bringing a new destination to Battery Park created by a team of renowned architects and designers, including landscape architect Ken Smith. The greatly anticipated One World Trade Center is now the most expensive new office tower in the world. An additional $700 million in estimated costs is bringing the total cost of 1 WTC to almost $3.8 billion. What’s more is that many of these extra millions are being tacked on due to a design flaw. According to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the necessary loading dock for tenants to move in will not be completed on time, so five temporary loading docks must be built, jacking the cost up by millions.

Students who fall within the autism spectrum are often overlooked in public education. To address the problem, a group of New York City parents came together in 2001 to create the LearningSpring School, a private day school that serves 108 students in grades K-8. Thanks to the thoughtful design of Platt Byard Dovell White Architects, the students will be moving to a new eight-story, vertically oriented campus on the corner of 20th Street and 2nd Avenue in Manhattan. The new school was built specifically to accomodate the needs of the children, incorporates a variety of green technologies, and has earned LEED Gold certification.

The High Line Park on the edge of West Chelsea will soon have a new neighbor: a 51-story LEED Gold tower for retail and commercial offices. Designed by Kohn Pederson Fox Associates, the tower, which is the largest portion of the Hudson Yards project, will be a giant retail center, and the largest commercial building in New York (even bigger than One World Trade Center!). Although it will not open until 2015, Coach has already signed on to be the building’s main tenant.

Empire State Building Achieves LEED Gold Certification

It’s official — the Empire State Building has been awarded LEED Gold certification. Thanks to a massive green overhaul that took more than two years, the landmark is now the tallest building in the United States to receive LEED certification. The groundbreaking retrofit included replacing the aging building’s windows with double hung operable windows and installing an energy efficient heating and cooling system. The changes are expected to reduce the building’s energy consumption by more than 38 percent and should save $4.4 million in energy costs.

New Fordham University Dormitories Obtain LEED Gold With Help From NYSERDA

More and more New York colleges are jumping on the green building bandwagon. Last week, Fordham University obtained LEED Gold certification for its recently built Rose Hill Dormitories, supported by $555,000 in NYSERDA incentives. The funding will also allow the University to reduce energy costs by $174,000 annually through new high performance lighting and occupancy controls, high efficiency chillers and boilers, a new heat recovery system, and numerous other energy efficiency measures.
