Now that the Citi Bike share program is open to all New Yorkers, there are sure to be even more folks needing bike parts and other riding-related apparatus on-the-go. Express Biker anticipated this demand and has launched two of its self-service vending machines offering bike-related emergency products (like patches for popped tires) in Brooklyn. Forget walking miles to the nearest bike shop or cursing the skies when service centers are closed. These on-demand, 24-hour kiosks will make getting bike repair supplies as easy as purchasing a bag of chips or a soda.

Prospect Park wants to change the way you “go” at the park with a new system that will compost human waste. NYC has plans to build a $1.8 million composting green latrine in the park’s historic Well House building that will look much like a regular bathroom except it will use “eco-friendly foam” and very little water. Luckily, visitors won’t be subject to the smelly side of the new system as waste will be stored in the depths of the composting compartment in the bathroom’s basement, keeping it out of treatment plants and the Gowanus Canal.

A few weeks ago, Prospect Park proposed a plan for the transformation of one lane of traffic into an additional bike lane, and Central Park is following suit. Terrace Drive, which is open to cars at rush hour, will soon have two lanes for bikes and just one for cars. This lane comes in addition to the new East/West pedestrian and bike path.

The city has plans to reduce the car traffic in Prospect Park drastically, but Brooklyn residents don’t think the proposed plan is quite enough. In a meeting last night, the Prospect Park Administration announced a plan to cut rush hour traffic from two lanes to one, giving pedestrians and bicyclists extra room. But a group called the Prospect Park Road Sharing Task force is pushing for the city to completely ban car traffic, leaving the roadways free for pedestrian and cyclist morning commutes.

That’s right – the Prospect Park geese are making headlines once again! After huge protests and outcry from local residents about the city’s mass slaughter of geese at Prospect Park last summer, the Department of Environmental Protection has decided that instead of dumping the bodies in a landfill, this year’s captured geese will be sent to Pennsylvania, where they will be slaughtered and distributed to food banks to feed the hungry. The Prospect Park geese are at the center of attention, yet again. A group of Brooklyn residents, business owners, and wildlife advocates have devised a program to stand guard over the Prospect Park geese at all hours of the day to prevent federal officials from using mass extermination methods as a way of maintaining the geese population. Armed with binoculars, cameras, and video recording equipment, the pro-geese group is determined to prevent another massacre like last summer’s.

Bike lanes in the Big Apple just can’t catch a break. As New York City continues to expand its greenways, it seems that every project is faced with opposition in one way or another. This past Sunday, hundreds of cyclists took to the streets to support the Prospect Park West bike lane, a lane that has courted controversy since being put in place less than a year ago. As we reported back in March, the lane is a 2-way greenway that runs along Prospect Park in Park Slope, Brooklyn. Supporters believe it is a family-friendly re-design of a once 3-lane, one-way road that accommodated speedy drivers and not much else. A larger than expected crowd showed up for the event, giving us hope that the lane won’t be removed.
