It’s not the sounds of the city or early morning trash removal that forces some Greenpoint, Brooklyn residents out of bed in the morning. Instead, a neighborhood rooster has become a local town favorite by bringing a bit of the countryside to the Kingsborough. Though it may be rather odd for a rooster to be lurking about, most residents don’t seem to be bothered by its crows. We’re curious to know, would you want to trade in your alarm clock for a daily cockle-doodle-doo?

The Brooklyn Grange is opening up their one-acre rooftop farm in Long Island City, Queens as a local hub for solar composting. The new system will repurpose food waste and scraps gathered from local restaurants and residents and turn them into valuable fertilizer for the farm’s planting projects. Downstairs coffee shop neighbor Coffeed is even in on the action, donating used grounds from their shop to help grow more vegetables and herbs for the farm.

Composting some of the near 650,000 tons of food that New York City residents toss each year just became a little easier. Queens residents can now help in the effort to reduce food waste with nonprofit program Build It Green! NYC’s new program, BIG!Compost. This initiative has introduced a new compost station outside of the Broadway N and Q train station in Astoria, Queens where commuters can conveniently drop off their scrap food on their way to work.

Eats festival and Dekalb Market, has, and they’re giving renters at their new space a chance to cultivate their own garden plots right on the roof! The development firm recently converted a penthouse on Fifth Avenue into twenty small offices, and each comes with its own urban farm space to grow veggies, fruits and other hyper-local eats.

While other youngsters spent the summer playing video games, the kids in Greenpoint’s SYSTEM program (Summer Youth in Science Technology Engineering and Math) were able to accomplish a feat most adults have never even tried – building a vertical garden farm from scratch. The industrious teens were led by Solar One educator Joe Chavez as part of a summer educational internship sponsored by the Greenpoint YMCA, the NYU Wallerstein Collaborative and ExxonMobil, and learned how to build a flourishing urban farm for the space-strapped Lentol Garden in their Brooklyn neighborhood. Students worked to maximize growing space in a small area, creating a thriving home for enthusiastic climbers like strawberries, mint, basil and flowering perennials.

The International Rescue Committee, an organization that provides opportunities for refugees to thrive in America, recently inaugurated a new farm in the Bronx on a lot previously owned by the city’s Department of Transportation. Located at the Grand Concourse and East 153rd Street, the New Roots Community Farm will soon be a veritable garden of Eden full of fruit trees and will even provide up to 60 plots and planting beds for local residents to plant fruit and vegetables. Working with people from the local community, including volunteers from the refugee organization and children from the nearby KIPP Academy elementary school, the IRC has already planted peppers, tomatoes and basil – and that’s only the beginning.

If all goes according to BrightFarms‘ ambitious new plan, Brooklyn, New York will soon be the home to the world’s largest rooftop farm. The hydroponic greenhouse company announced last week that Sunset Park was chosen as the location for the future 100,000 square ft., multi-acre farm rooftop farm, which would be able to grow enough food to meet the fresh produce needs of 5,000 New Yorkers. Up until now, trying to find produce grown in Brooklyn yielded slim pickins’ (though we know a few great spots). The new facility will create 25 new full-time jobs and could change the business models of many local merchants by providing them with a producer that’s just a few miles, or even a few blocks, away.

For the latest film in the Made by Hand series, the filmmakers pointed their cameras at a NYC-based urban rooftop beekeeper. Megan Paska is a beekeeper, backyard farmer and educator — she gets stuff done. She’s doing a lot of exciting work in the city: consulting for Mario Batali, starting a farm pop-up store and workshop, as well as collaborating on the city’s first bee breeding program.

Throughout New York City’s five boroughs, there are thousands of acres of city land sitting completely empty. One such lot sits across the street from P.S. 323 in Brownsville, Brooklyn. Once filled with weeds and trash, the 8,000-square-foot lot is currently being transformed into a lush educational student farm by teacher Nora Painten. Painten successfully raised more than $24,000 through Kickstarter to help fund the farm, which will have a chicken coop, bee hive, outdoor classroom, and dozens of vegetables and herbs. Over the next month, Painten is hosting volunteer days to help bring the farm to life.

With temperatures barely dipping below freezing and a near non-existent snowfall, New York City, along with most of the country, has been experiencing one of the warmest winters on record. Just last week, temperatures neared 60, and throughout the city, early signs of spring — buds on trees, crocuses in full bloom — are popping up. Flowers and warm weather are certainly nicer than piles of snow and slush, but what does this mean for the health of our gardens and farms? Horticulturists at the city’s botanical gardens, as well as farmers in the Hudson Valley, are concerned about harsh frosts and possible snowfall, which can end a plant’s bloom for the season, or worse, throw off its life cycle and pollination.
