This May welcomes the prestigious Frieze Art Fair’s first presence on New York City, its main focus is on its hometown of London, which happens every October. The Bloomberg-supported event has taken over Randall’s Island for the weekend, bringing a spirit of fine art, performances, and food to the isle which borders the Bronx and is adjacent to Ward’s Island (which houses the Manhattan Psychiatric Center).
Although the fair is reachable by car via the Triborough Bridge, or subway with connecting fair shuttle buses, Inhabitat recommends taking the complimentary ferry, which picks up art lovers from the Water Taxi pier at 34th Street at the East River. The journey up the East River passes Roosevelt Island, Ward’s Island, and the Mill Rock island group before reaching Randalls Island, while giving passengers gorgeous views of the skyline.
Once on the island, visitors are greeted with sculpture gardens, interactive art installations, and performances, which flank the lawn of the temporary pavilion. The SO-IL-designed pavilion is constructed from strips of vinyl set on a steel frame. A row of angled vinyl strips mark the entrance, filtering sunlight while providing shade allowing air to circulate. Inside, the massive space has cathedral ceilings, which diffuse natural light into each exhibitor’s booth, highlighting the impressive international art on display and for sale.
Frieze continues through May 6th.
