New Yorkers throw away nearly 200,000 tons [3] of clothing a year. But thanks to a recent spurt of recycling programs throughout New York City, collecting and reusing textiles is becoming easier than ever. One program called Re-fashionNYC [4] was just launched last year and has already collected over 50 tons of textiles in its first six months. Re-fashioNYC [3], who places clothing recycling bins in apartment buildings throughout the five boroughs, has 130 participating buildings so far and hundreds of requests flowing in daily.

Re-fashioNYC is a partnership between the city and Housing Works [5], a healing community group for people living with or affected by HIV and AIDS. The program is available for any apartment building with 10 units or more and also offers donation pick up and even thrift store options for more expensive pieces of clothing.

New York’s textile recycling boom [6] has even created a home for old ripped and stained clothing. The Secondary Materials and Recycled Textiles Association [7] collects damaged clothes, spare buttons, and zippers to create carpet pads, cleaning rags, and more! With donation numbers expected to double this year, New York City anticipates trading in its massive garbage bill for a bourgeoning green community.
